ABSTRACT This invention relates to compounds of the formula: Image wherein R1 and R2 are each independently hy- drogen or alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, or R1 and R2 together with the carbon atom to which they are attached form a cycloalkyl ring; R3 is hydrogen or alkyl; R4 is hydrogen or alkyl; and R5 is selected from a variety of substituents. These compounds are valuable for use as intermed- iates in the preparation of compounds of the formula: Image and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof, which are themselves useful in that they possess antibacterial activity.
