ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A disposable surgical stapler has a tubular pusher movable in a tubular housing, a central rod movable in the pusher and a handle pivotally mounted on the housing, and extending into slots in the housing and pusher for moving the pusher. A staple carrying assembly on the housing is activated by the pusher to urge staples against an anvil on the rod. The position of the rod relative to the housing is determined such that the anvil and the assembly are properly spaced apart for fastening tissue between them. A groove in the rod is located, so that when the anvil and the assembly are thus properly spaced apart the pusher slot is laterally aligned with the rod groove and an end of the handle can move into the groove and against an end of the pusher slot to move the pusher to activate the assembly.
