ABSTRACT The quality of coke, and the yield and quality of the gases, are sub- stantially improved if the necessary coking heat is supplied simultaneously from both ends. To achieve this, a coking plate, fitted in front of the body of a coke oven door, is heated, more particularly by the gases released and passed through a gas-collecting passage. These gases flow closely past plate and are thereby rendered turbulent. The coking plate consists of overlapping shields which are secured to the body of the door by spacing members and, at the same time, serve to locate a layer of insulating material arranged on the inside of the body of the door. Under-surface of the shields comprise rein- forcing ribs which are also used to connect thereto spacing members holding the said shields to one end. At the other end the shields rest loosely upon the next shield. This forms, as it were, armoured-scale structures which are easy to install and remove. The coking plate is used to coke the ends of the oven, to relieve the pressure on the coke oven door seal, and to obtain the smallest possible distance between the oven-charge and the body of the door.
