A crystalline polyarylether capable of being shaped into fibres or films or moulded or used as a matrix in composites, contains repeating units Ph1n, Ar1 and Ar2 connected by ether linkages, wherein Ph' is 1, 3 or 1, 4- phenylene optionally substituted with 0 to 4 methyl or chloro groups. n is an integer from 1 to 4 Ar1 is Ph [CO [Ph' CO]x Ph] y wherein x = 0 or 1 y = 1 or 2 Ph is 1,4-phenylene optionally substituted with 0 to 4 methyl or chloro groups, and Ar2 is [Phn SO2 ]v Ph'w wherein u, v and w are integers from 1 to 4; said units being in the relative molar proportions: Ph'n 40 to 60% Ar1 92 to 50% of the total of Ar1 and Ar2. and Ar2 8 to 48% of the total.
