ABSTRACT A method for decoding messages coded as blocks of a fixed number of symbols and affected by symbol substitu- tions, deletions and insertions. For each message received which has a length within selected limits, a sequence of words is generated which comprises all the possible error combinations which can be corrected in the message. By using the sequence of words, a decoded word is generated for each frame. Then the probability that a decoded word actually is the transmitted word is calculated and the decoded word, whose probability value satisfies predeter- mined criteria, is emitted as a decoded message.
