ABSTRACT A pulsing combustion device for use in gas and liquid heaters and steam generators has an elongate combustion chamber with an inlet for a combustible mixture and an unvalved outlet for combustion gases. A flat plate floating valve member is mounted in reciprocation relation in a wall of said combustion chamber, and has a first side in communication with the combustion chamber and a second side in communication with a supply of a pressurized combustible mixture. There are a plurality of ports through said flat plate valve member. Reciprocation of the floating valve member in the wall closes and opens communication through the ports between the supply of combustible mixture and the combustion chamber. A pressurized combustible mixture is fed to the second side of the floating valve member through supply means having substantially smaller cross section area than the second side of the floating valve member. The device includes means for igniting and combusting the combustible mixture in said combustion chamber to produce pressurized combus- tion gases. The floating valve member is reciprocated by said pressurized combustible mixture in communication with the second side and the pressurized combustion gases in communication with the first side to regulate the flow of combustible mixture into said combustion chamber.
