ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE There is disclosed an improved lubricating oil dispersant suitable for both gasoline engine and diesel engine lubricating oil, the dispersant being prepared in a sequential process whereby a polyolefin succinic an- hydride is reacted first with an alkylene polyamine and subsequently with maleic anhydride, succinic anhydride, or a C1-C18 alkenyl or alkyl succinic anhydride to provide a diimide dispersant having a final mole ratio of 2.3 to 3.0 moles of anhydride per mole of polyamine.
