A B S T R A C T The invention relates to a process for the transport of heavy oil wherein an emulsifier- containing oil-in-water emulsion with at least 10-15 of water is transported and subsequently separated again into crude oil and water. The emulsifier employed is a carboxymethylated oxalkylate of the formula Image wherein R is a saturated or unsaturated, linear or branched aliphatic residue of 6-20 carbon atoms, an alkylaromatic residue of 4-16 carbon atoms, or a di- or trialkylaromatic residue of, in total, 5-20 and, respectively, 7-24 carbon atoms in the alkyl groups, m is 1 to 30, n is 1 to 40, and M is an alkali of alkaline earth metal ion or ammonium.
