APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR SNAP-SEPARATION OF WEB MATERIAL ABSTRACT The apparatus of the present invention includes three winder rolls which guide a web of material on to a core, wind the web around the core to form a log of material, and then move the log away from the web with a snapping action 80 as to separate the web of material. The rolls are separately driven so that the peripheral speed of the rolls may differ with respect to each other. The space between two of the rolls pro- vides a throat through which a core may be moved and in which the web of the material may be restrained be- tween the core and one of the rolls. The speed of the other two rolls is modified to move the log of material away from the throat to cause a snap-separation of the web material between throat and log. The speed of the second two rolls may be further differentially-con- trolled so as to cause the log of material to move, selectively, away from the throat and back toward the throat, as desired, to provide a loop of web material which may be pinched between the core and one of the rolls. -1-
