ABSTRACT The present invention relates to sub- stituted purine arabinosides and their pharma- ceutically acceptable derivatives especially esters and their use in the treatment and prophylaxis of varicella zoster virus and cytomegalovirus infections, as well as pharmaceutical formulations containing the arabinosides or their derivatives and processes for the preparation of such compounds; the arabinosides are of formula (I): Image (I) wherein R1 represents a halogen atom, a C1-5 alkoxy group; halogen-substituted C1-5 alkoxy; an amino group which is mono- or di-substituted by C1-5 alkyl, C1-5 alkyl substituted by one or more fluorine atoms, or C3-6 cycloalkyl, or the amino member of a ring containing 4-7 carbon atoms and optionally a double bond and/or a further nitrogen atom; and R2 repre- sents hydrogen, halogen or amino.
