SWITCHED BIAS CIRCUIT FOR HIGH SPEED LIGHT EMITTING DIODE TRANSMITTER Abstract of the Disclosure A circuit provides two-level data bursts for transmission on a fiber optic bus by turning on and off a light emitting diode, in accordance with high and low levels of a data burst signal. In a first, adjustment mode, the diode is excited with current from a first source of first programmable means. The current increases from zero to a first level IB, at which the diode is emitting light at an intensity corresponding to a knee in the operating characteristic curve of the diode. The first programmable means stores the value of the current level of IB. While the first current source is still supplying current IB, a second current source within second programmable means supplies to the diode additional current. Current from the second source increases from zero until the diode is emitting light at a second desired level. The second level occurs when the diode is being excited with a total current IB+IM, which is the desired operating point on the diode's operating characteristic curve. The second programmable means stores the value of current IM, which is being produced by the second current source. During a data transmission mode, switching means in the circuit supplies from the first source to the diode current at a level determined by the stored value IB during the entire data burst; and supplies to the diode additional current from the second source at a level determined by the stored second value of IM only during the high level parts of the data burst signal. In the absence of a data burst, neither current source is operative and the diode is not excited.
