Abstract of the Disclosure: For converting a web of wrapping material (38) from a U-shaped cross section into a tubular shape, an edge guiding mechanism is used having two edge engaging means which may be performed as suction means (42 and 43). Each of said suction means (42 and 43) is supported by a pair of guiding rods (52, 53; 54, 55) converging from a forming means (8) and towards a longitudinal welding means (9). When the suction means (42, 43) are moved along the rods (52-55), the suction means are moved towards one another. The suction means (42, 43) provide an engagement with the outer surface of the edges of the web of material (38) and ensure the movement of said edges towards one another and towards the longitudinal welding means (9) so that a web (38) even of a thin and flexible material is securely engaged with the longitudinal welding means (9).
