NUCLEAR FUEL SYSTEM ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE In a fuel element for a nuclear reactor, having a stack of fuel pellets contained within a metal sheath, the pellets at the ends of the stack are of reduced density, in order to modify the local temperature rise and thereby limit the radial expansion of the end pellets relative to the adjacent portions of the sheath. This in turn tends to avoid the generation of undue stresses in the material of the sheath, in particular with regard to the weld zone where the element end cap is attached to the sheath by way of a peripheral weld. The end pellets also may be provided with a taper at their outer ends, to further obviate the generation of local stresses.
