Abstract of the Disclosure A system is provided for the automatic, self-checking switching of a medical infusion controller among a plurality of modes of operation. A medical infusion controller has a plurality of pressure-sensitive switches (379 38), each of which corresponds to a different mode of operation. A drip chamber (11) is provided with nub elements (14) in one of a variety of possible configurations, each of which correspond to one of the pressure-sensitive switches on the controller. When the drip chamber is placed in the controller, the nub configuration activates the corresponding switch. If the controller detects an incorrect number of numbs, it delivers an error message.
