Title of the Invention Optical Character Reader Abstract of the Disclosure An optical character reader which radiate the light onto a form in which characters or symbols are entered, receives the reflected light from the form by an image sensor, images the characters or symbols on the surface of the image sensor, outputs from the image sensor electric signals corresponding to the characters or symbols image-formed, and optically read the characters or symbols on the basis of the electric signals, so that in a case where the image sensor moves away from the form and the reflected light is scarcely received, a current flowing in a lamp (a light source lamp) for radiating the light is reduced, and also, when the image sensor is positioned completely on the form and the value of electric signal becomes smaller than the preset value, the current flowing in the lamp is increased until the quantity of the reflected light is of optimum value, thereby prolonging a life span of a lamp and largely improving a correct read percentage for radiating the characters or symbols to be read in an optimum quantity of light.
