A b s t r a c t water-resistant nacreous pigments are prepared by a process which comprises hydrolyzing a zirconyl compound in an aqueous medium in the presence of a hypo- phosphite, thereby forming hydrated zirconium oxide and depositing it onto the surface of the base pigment of metal oxide-coated mica flakes.
