The process comprises blending water-containing organic vegetable matter with a volatile organic fluid foaming agent and alkenyl aromatic polymeric material under pressure and temperature below the critical temperature of the volatile organic fluid foaming agent, and extruding the resulting blowable mixture into a zone of lower pressure.
