ABSTRACT A method for separating bitumen from a bituminous oil-in- water emulsion froth which is resistant to coalescence by milling, by (a) milling the emulsion with a ball mill, roller mill or equivalent milling device to impart a crushing action on said emulsion froth; (b) adding to said emulsion froth an amount of previously coalesced bitumen effective to initiate and maintain coalescence in said mill; (c) allowing a bitumen-rich liquid fraction to rise to the surface of the milled emulsion; and (d) separating said bitumen-rich fraction.
