Abstract of the Disclosure A volatile and thermally stable complex of cerium, Ce(fod)4, and alkali metal-cerium .beta.-diketonate intermediates useful in its preparation and as sources of mixed metals, such as Na[Ce(fod)4] are described. The cerium (IV) complex, [tetrakis-(6,6,7,7,8,8,8,- heptafluoro-2,2-dimethyl-3,5-octanedione) cerium (IV)] is preferably prepared by reacting the deprotonated diketone (fod-) with a soluble cerium (IV) salt.
