ABSTRACT PROSTAGLANDINS Compounds of formula Image (I) where Image represents one of the divalent cyclic groups Image the letters a and b indicating in each case the points of attachment of the substituents R1 and C(R2)=0, respectively; R1 is a group -(CH2)b-(A)a-(CH2)c-B-CH2-CO2R' in which A and B are each separately oxygen or sulphur, a is 0, b is 0 and c is an integer from 3 to 10, or a is 1, b is 0 or an integer from 1 to 7 and c is an integer from 2 to 9 with the sum of b and c being from 2 to 9, and CO2R' is a carboxy group or an amide, ester or salt derivative thereof; and R2 is hydrogen, a C1-12 aliphatic hydrocarbon group or a C1-12 aliphatic hydrocarbon group substituted by a group Ar, OAr or SAr, where Ar represents a phenyl, napthyl, fluorenyl, dibenzocyclohexyl, dibenzocycloheptyl, pyridyl, benzthiazolyl, dihydrobenzthiazolyl, N-methyldihydrobenzthiazolyl, benzoxazolyl, dihydrobenzoxazolyl or N-methyldihydrobenzoxazolyl group or such a group substituted by one or more substituents selected from C1-12 alkoxy, halogeno, C1-12 halogeno-substituted alkyl, sulphamoyl, amino, hydroxyl, nitro and C1-12 alkyl groups are of value as intermediates for use in the synthesis of biologically active prostaglandin compounds.
