-22- ABSTRACT The method and the apparatus for determining the substance amount of quantities of fibres or for determining the substance cross section of slivers (5) uses the elastic or dynamic properties of a fibre quantity. In a first variant, a resonance system comprising a spring and mass is formed, the fibre quantity or the sliver acting as the spring. Thus, the resonance frequency is a measurement for the density of the fibre quantity, or the sliver. In a second variant, in the case of a sliver, the sliver (5) which is guided in a tube or in a funnel (6) is exposed to mechanical, pulses or oscillations which are propagated in the sliver with a certain damping and with a velocity which depends both on the density of the sliver as well as on the modulus of elasticity thereof. The transit time of these pulses or oscillations thus produces a measurement for the substance cross section of the fibre quantity or sliver.
