27587-43 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Aluminum and aluminum based alloy surfaces can be made highly hydrophilic and resistant to the growth of odor causing microbes by treatment with a solution combining a waterglass and a borate or boric acid to form a liquid film, drying and heating the liquid film to form an adherent solid film, covering this solid film with a liquid film of a solution of a salt of hydroxide of a multivalent cation such as calcium or magnesium, and drying this second liquid film.
