BASE-ACTIVATED WOOD POLYMER ADHESIVE SYSTEM ABSTRACT A process for manufacturing a composite wood body exhibiting wet and dry strength is disclosed. In the first step, wood members are treated with an aqueous solution of-a selected strong alkali sufficient to activate the wood polymers comprising the wood members without pulping the wood members. In the second step, a methylolated phenolic wood polymer is provided to form a reactive, gap-filling wood polymer adhesive on the wood members. Finally, the wood members together with applied methylolated phenolic wood polymer are pressed to form the composite wood body.
