ABSTRACT: The invention relates to a duplex speech transmission method and a system therefor and has particular, but not exclusive, application to cordless telephone systems. In known time division duplex transmission systems speech by one party is digitalised at a certain mean bit rate and then time-compressed and applied in alter- nate slots in a speech transmission channel, the remaining slots being used by the other party on the link. The disadvantage of this known system is that when one person is not speaking then his slots on the transmission channel are left vacant. In the method described when it is determined that one party has no valid speech to send in his time slot then the other party is able to use that time slot so that his speech can be digitised at a higher mean bit rate, thereby providing greater fidelity and avoiding vacant slots in the trans- mission channel.
