ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE a-spartylphenylalanine derivatives are produced by converting a .beta.-aspar-tylphenylalanine derivative of the formula: Image wherein R2 and R3 are each hydrogen or Cl 4 alkyl in a non- alcoholic solvent into an imide intermediate of the formula: Image where R1 is hydrogen or Cl 4 alkyl; and thereafter converting said imide into an a-aspartylphenylalanine derivative of the following formula in the presence of a base: Image wherein R4 and R5 are each hydrogen or Cl 4 alkyl. The above derivative is useful for the production of an a-aspar-tyl- phenylalanine.
