A B S T R A C T A process for the preparation of glycol aldehyde, which comprises reacting formaldehyde with hydrogen and carbon mon- oxide, in the presence of a catalyst system derived from a rhodium-containing catalyst precursor and/or a cobalt-containing catalyst precursor together with a strong protonic acid, glycol aldehyde so prepared, a process to hydrogenate said glycol aldehyde to produce ethylene glycol, and ethylene glycol so produced.
