Abstract of the Disclosure A flame-retardant composition, useful for producing shaped articles by molding processes, comprises a polyphenylene ether and a polystyrene resin in a weight ratio of between about 4:1 to 1:4 in admixture with an aromatic thermoplastic polyphosphonate having a number average molecular weight of 4,000 to 80,000, the thermo- plastic polyphosphonate being present in an amount of 1 to 20 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of the total mixture, and having as the main recurring units the structure Image wherein R' is alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkenyl, aryl, arylalkyl or arylalkenyl, X is phenylene, biphenylene, alkylenebisphenylene, cycloalkylene- bisphenylene, thiobisphenylene, oxybisphenylene, sulphonylbis- phenylene, carbonylbisphenylene or naphthalene.
