ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process is provided for the preparation of 2-halogenoresorcinols having the following Formula I: Image (I) where X represents a halogen atom and R ant R1, which may be identical or different, represent a hydrogen atom, or R and R1 individually or together represent a substituted or unsubstituted hydroxyl, carboxyl, amino, cyano or amido group, or esters of the hydroxyl, carboxyl and amido groups. The process comprises sulfonating the corresponding resorcinols or derivatives thereof which do not contain a halogen in position-2 to produce a sulfonation product. The sulfonation product so produced is halogenated to produce a halogenation product. The halogenation product thereby obtained is subsequently protodesulfonated, e.g., by acid hydrolysis and, if desired, any functional groups which may be present can be modified.
