ABSTRACT A process for catalyst exchange in narrow tubular reactors which have a height to diameter ratio of at least 30:1, as well as an arrangement for the implementation of the process is provided. Catalyst exchange can be achieved quite simply when the catalyst charge is expelled against the force of gravity with the aid of a transport fluid. As transfer fluids, liquids, such as water or oil, and gases, such as compressed air, come into consideration. In the simplest instance, water can serve as the transport medium when the catalyst is not to be reused or is compatible with moisture. Preferably transport pauses of between about 0.1 to 1 seconds are introduced between transport periods of 2 to 20 seconds for the transport fluid, thereby permitting the emptying of the catalyst from the reactor within one minute.
