Abstract of the Disclosure Oil-soluble metal salts are produced by the reaction of a poly- valent metal, such as nickel or cobalt, with an organic monocarboxylic acid in the presence of an alkali metal salt catalyst, water, oxygen, and an inert, water-immiscible organic solvent. The process of the invention is efficient and economical, and the metal salts produced by the reaction do not contain amounts of residual catalyst or other impurities that will have an adverse effect on their activity as catalysts in various chemical processes. Oil- soluble metal salts are widely used as paint, varnish, and printing ink driers, as lubricant additives, as catalysts for the chemical industry, and as fuel oil additives.
