ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An improvement is provided in a fluid coupling for a conduit which features a quick connect-disconnect construction between first and second coupling members. The coupling includes first and second coupling members and retaining means for interlocking the members, the first coupling member having a generally cylindrical configuration comprising a main body portion, a reduced diameter body portion having a peripheral surface, and a first wall extending radially of and intersecting the portions, the main body portion having a peripheral groove therein, the second coupling member being positioned over the first coupling member and having a principal cylindrical bore generally contiguous with the reduced diameter portion, an enlarged diameter bore generally contiguous with the main body portion, and a second wall contiguous with the first wall and extending radially of and intersecting the bores, the intersection of the second wall and the principal bore forming a beveled shoulder, the enlarged diameter bore having a peripheral groove opposite the peripheral groove in the first coupling member, the retaining means comprising a U-shaped member having legs, the legs being inserted into the peripheral grooves of the first and second coupling members to interlock the members, the reduced diameter body portion of the first coupling member having a plurality of spaced peripheral grooves therein, and resilient sealing members positioned with the grooves and contacting the second coupling member to create a fluid-tight seal. The improvement resides in the fact that one of the peripheral grooves is located at the intersection of the first wall and the reduced diameter body portion and interrupts the peripheral surface immediately adjacent the first wall, the bevelled shoulder being located radially contiguous to the one peripheral groove and engaging and compressing the sealing member in the one groove in such a Abstract continued manner that the sealing member in the one groove is placed under compression andapplies axial and radial compressive forces between the first and second coupling members. This avoids the dual problem of shock load resulting in fatigue and failure, and low pressure weepage past the sealing members.
