Abstract of the Disclosure First and second drive circuits for sequentially applying drive signals to data lines of a display panel are provided at opposite sides of the display panel. The first and second drive circuits each have a bidirectional shift register for producing sequential scanning pulses which is switched in its data shifting direction in accordance with a control signal. The first and second drive circuits are set reversely in the drive signal generating sequence at their outputs. According to this configuration, the first and second drive circuits can be constructed of the same circuit arrangement, and the necessity of crossing wires between either one of the first and second drive circuits and the display panel can be obviated.
