ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION A data communication system is disclosed that uses a bus for communication between multiple stations. Its new features include a conceptualized token which is employed such that when owned by a station it allows that station to transmit high level (non-access) messages over the bus and to command other stations to transmit messages to it, if desired by the token owning station. Each station capable of ownership embodies a similar access mechanism which allows the system to automatically generate a token list of stations with periodic ownership of the token as well as expansion and contraction of this token list. Automatic change in the token pass handshake protocol is described. Bus interconnection to stations without the capability of token access is provided with communication control by a station having token ownership capability.
