-29- FIELD-INVERSION GEL ELECTROPHORESIS Abstract of the Disclosure A method and apparatus for gel electrophoresis which employs periodic inversion of the electric field essentially in one dimension, denoted as field-inversion gel electro- phoresis (FIGE), results in net migration by using a longer time or higher voltage in one direction than in the opposite direction. FIGE permits separation of DNA or protein mixtures in size ranges not amenable to ordinary electrophoresis.
