ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method is provided herein for the quantitative colorimetric determination of nitrate ions. The method comprises mixing the sample to be investigated with concentrated sulfuric acid (e.g. of 24-36N) and adding a reagent which initiates coloration, the reagent being a compound of the general formula 4,4'-RO-C6H4-C6H4-OR, wherein R is H or substituted or unsubstituted C1-6 alkyl (e.g. 4,4'-bianisole). A reagent and kit for colorimetric nitrate determination are also provided.
