ABSTRACT Title: A system for subterranean storage of energy A system for subterranean storage of energy in caverns (4,5) formed in a subterranean salt formation (3), the lower sides thereof being interconnected by means of a first channel (8) and the upper sides by means of a second channel (10), said channels (8,10) interconnecting the liquid and gas spaces res- pectively, in which first channel (8) an assembly (21) is inclu- ded for pumping liquid from the lower (4) towards the higher (5) cavern, and for producing electric energy by liquid flowing back from the higher (5) towards the lower (4) cavern, which gas pres- sure is, furthermore, such that at this assembly (21) the diffe- rence between the gas pressure and the hydrostatic pressure dif- ference between both liquid spaces is at least equal to zero. Said assembly (21') is located at the ground surface (1) and is connected, by means of two branches (8,9,26,27) of said first channel to the lower sides of the lower and higher cavern (4,5) respectively, the gas pressure being chosen such that the liquid is driven upwards from the lower cavern (4) towards the surface (1), and no cratering towards the ground surface (1) from said higher cavern (5) can occur.
