Process for the preparation of a basic alkaline earth metal salt of an organic carboxylic acid, which comprises (a) preparing a mixture in a hydrocarbon solvent of one equivalent of the organic carboxylic acid and at least one equivalent of an alkaline earth metal hydroxide and/or oxide and optionally a C1-6 alcohol; (b) introducing carbon dioxide into the mixture until at least 0.6 equivalent carbon dioxide per equivalent alkaline earth metal has been taken up; (c) adding at least one further equivalent of alkaline earth metal hydroxide and/or oxide to the reaction mixture; (d) resuming the introduction of carbon dioxide to the resulting mixture; and (e) removing the aqueous layer and any residual solids. Such a salt has dispersant properties and is suitable for use in lubricating oil compositions.
