ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: The invention relates to a process for the selective side-chain halogenation of mono and polyalkylaromatic hydro- carbons in such a manner as to introduce one atom for each side chain in the alpha position at the aromatic nucleus, which comprises reacting the respective hydrocarbon with an N-halogenoamine derived from a primary or secondary amine which has no C-H bonds in the delta position at the nitro- gen, at a temperature of from -20 to +40°C in the presence of a proton donor and of a catalyst constituted by a metal ion which is capable of existing in various oxidation states but which is in a lower oxidation state, the quantity of said catalyst varying from 1 to 50 mol % with respect to the alkyl side chains of the starting polyalkylaromatic hydrocarbons, and the molar ratio of said proton donor to said N-halogenoamine being between 1.2 and 8.
