A single bolt coupling for the attachment to the end portion of a pipe having a circumferential shoulder or groove in such end portion includes a coupling which receives the end portion of the pipe therein and a circumferential open ended resilient ring accommodated partially in the internal groove adjacent to the end portion of the coupling body which said ring, after the end portion of the pipe is received in the coupling body and advanced toward the center of the coupling body, the ring is expanded, by the larger outer diameter of the pipe, to a larger diameter inside said groove, but the ring by its memory swings back to its original diameter when the two grooves in the end portions of the coupling and the pipe oppositely coincide, and the ring engages opposite grooves in a locking position and the pipe cannot be pulled from the coupling. The coupling is provided with a screw vise mechanism to expand the ring so that, while the pipe is being received by the coupling, the pipe does not encounter the ring at all until the ring is mounted into the groove of the pipe or pipe encounters the ring to desirable minimum extent. The coupling with rings at each end also can couple two plain ended pipes; or the coupling may have a ring at one end and a different type of connector, like threads, a flange, or a set of partially rotatable cammed jaw members at the other end, or a plain opening to make a bell type joint. The coupling can also be used for pipe fittings, hoses, valves, pressure vessels, lids, dead end of pipe, structural pipe, and electrical conduits. The coupling also can be used to make expansion joints in the pipe line to accommodate thermal expansion. Valves may be incorporated into the coupling itself between the ends of the pipes being coupled, or coupling may be incorporated into the valve body as a connecting component in a valve. The coupling is provided with self energizing circumferential diaphragm gasket.
