Side lighting of a transparent panel with etched features to scatter light towards an observer provides a physically robust alternative to neon tube technology. In particular, a number of advantages can be realized by using chip on board (COB) LED technology. COB LEDs (107) offer particular advantages in allowing use of low operating voltages as well as control over the intensity and color of the displays. Other advantages are realized by aligning two or more panels (101), each with a portion of a design, and independently varying the color or intensity of light.
