A process for producing anhydrous magnesium chloride comprising steps of selective calcination of Mg-containing minerals, selective leaching of magnesium by using as a leaching solvent ammonium chloride dissolved in a substantially waterfree polar organic solvent. Insoluble impurities are separated, magnesium chloride hexammoniate is precipitated and anhydrous magnesium chloride and ammonia are formed by thermal decomposition of the hexammoniate crystals.
