ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method is provided for the determination of the species identity of an organism (sample) and/or the population identity of that organism. The method comprises the steps of: isolating DNA from the sample; amplifying a defined segment of the DNA; determining the DNA sequence of the amplified segment; and comparing that DNA sequence with a data base of DNA sequences from known species. A kit is also provided comprising a carrier including at least one container containing DNA from a defined organism; an amplified segment of the DNA from the defined organism; and DNA sequences for a plurality of species or DNA derived therefrom.
