A digital telecommunication network, comprising: a number of user terminals each having a user interface which enables the user to call other user terminals by dialling telephone numbers assigned thereto and to call-up additional network functions, and a switch system establishing call connections between the user terminals and providing the additional network functions, wherein the user terminals are formed by multi-purpose computers which emulate the functions and the user interface of a telephone set, and the switch system is formed by a central unit directly connected to the user terminals through a network on which the user terminals communicate with each other and with the central unit in accordance with a transmission protocol based on addressed data packets.
