A clutch (36) actuated by a stationary electromagnet (56), with a flat armature plate (66) having a series of arcuate slats (70, 72), has a one-piece cast iron rotor having inner and outer cylindrical portions (12, 22) connected at one end by a radial clutch portion (14) having a series of arcuate slots (16, 18, 20) opening at its armature-engaging sur- face (26). The rotor is made from a one-piece cast iron casting (10) which is lightly machined to provide the armature-engaging surface (26) and electromagnet clearing surfaces (32, 34). A preferred composi- tion of the cast iron is specified.
