A technique for reducing lookups to a branch target address cache (BTAC) is disclosed. In this technique, a branch target address is retrieved from the BTAC in response to a miss in looking up an instruction address in an instruction cache (I-cache). The branch target address is associated with the instruction address. The branch target address retrieved from the BTAC is stored in the I-cache. With this disclosed technique, subsequent instruction addresses are looked up in the I-cache, nonparallel to the BTAC, thus saving power by reducing needless BTAC lookups.

La présente invention concerne une technique de réduction de recherches dans une antémémoire d'adresses de cible de branche (BTAC). Dans cette technique, on récupère une adresse de cible de branche à partir de la BTAC en réponse à une recherche infructueuse d'une adresse d'instruction dans une antémémoire d'instruction (I-cache). L'adresse de cible de branche est associée à l'adresse d'instruction. L'adresse de cible de branche récupérée à partir de la BTAC est stockée dans l'I-cache. Grâce à cette technique, on recherche des adresses d'instructions subséquentes dans l'I-cache, non parallèle à la BTAC, économisant ainsi de l'énergie en réduisant les recherches de BTAC inutiles.
