A rapid and highly sensitive detection method has been developed for the detection of bacterial contamination in a blood product or sample. More specifically, a Quantitative (real time) Polymerase Chain Reaction (QPCR) assay is provided to detect bacterial contamination in a blood product or sample. The method of detection is adapted to detect one or more bacterial contaminants in a single assay, including but not limited to S. epidermidis.
