A general disinfection method for water in plumbing installations such as sinks, siphon traps, and drains, water used in the production of beverages, and diluting and rinsing water for surface and floor disinfection, wherein sodium hypochlorite is used as the active agent. The method is characterized in that hypochlorite is formed in situ and the excess is broken down into water and free oxygen. Oxidation-reduction systems for implementing the method are also provided.
