The present invention provides an absorbent garment subassembly for attaching to an absorbent garment (10), the absorbent garment (10) having a front portion, a back portion and two side portions. The subassembly has a first carrier layer (32) and an elastic member (60) operatively associated with the first carrier layer (32). The elastic member (60) has a center portion (62) and two end portions (63). The center portion (62) has a greater area than either of the end portion (63).
