Apparatus and methods for the provision of a recording chart to receive one or more data traces, corresponding to respective variable parameters, utilise a printer which is arranged to print onto a sheet of paper a recording web. In a further feature, a computer or processor is arranged to receive information, e.g. as from a probe or the like, for use in instructing the printer to print on the paper one or more data traces showing variations in a number of parameters. In a variation the printer is arranged to print onto the sheet of paper both a web and the one or more data traces. The invention provides firstly an initially plain sheet or roll of paper, such as conventional paper stock, on which is pre-printed a recording web. Secondarily, the invention provides recording charts, having one or more traces corresponding to respective variable parameters over printed on a recording web formed on an initially plain sheet of paper stock. Thirdly, the invention provides apparatus and methods for the provision on an initially blank sheet of paper of a recording circular or radial time based chart web which is either blank and ready for use, or which bears also one or more traces corresponding to variations of at least one variable parameter. It may utilise primarily a printer and a template having on it markings corresponding to the recording chart web required. Such a printer and template may be used to print a stock of recording charts ready for use. In a further arrangement, the printer is controlled by a processor which receives information, as to variation of one or more parameters, and controls the printer for printing traces which correspond to said variation, whilst simultaneously there is fed to the printer, together with an initially blank sheet of paper, a template which has on it the markings required to enable the printer to reproduce the recording chart web. Fourthly, the invention provides a meter system for the collection and reporting of parametric data, and data management circuit control boards in modular form for plug and play insertion into a virtual talking meter system, and a method of operating a related meter system.
