The cutter is made up of a housing having an upper compartment for receipt of the bagel before it is cut and, spaced vertically below that compartment, a lower compartment from which the bagel is discharged after it is cut. A saw is mounted for reciprocation between the two compartments. The housing has an upper wall which may be raised or lowered by hand. The wall serves two functions: it presses the bagel downward into contact with the saw; and it causes the saw to reciprocate as it is pressed downward. As the saw reciprocates it cuts the bagel.

Une scie exerçant un mouvement de va-et-vient est montée entre les deux compartiments. Le boîtier comprend une paroi supérieure qui peut être levée ou abaissée d'un mouvement de la main. La paroi a deux fonctions : exercer une pression vers le bas sur le bagel pour qu'il soit en contact avec la scie; actionner la scie dans un mouvement de va-et-vient sous l'effet de la pression vers le bas exercée sur le bagel. La scie coupe le bagel au cours de son mouvement de va-et-vient.
